About 1100 km of River Elbe and their adjacent rivers and side channels provide favourable connections for cargo traffic between the rising markets of middle and eastern Europe and the seaport of Hamburg. The future amount of transportation can hardly be overcome by the actual modal split. Therefore available capacities of inland waterways attain more relevance for foreign trade industry in Germany and Czech Republic along the Elbe river.

At this year’s conference “Elbschifffahrtstag” in Dessau-Rosslau actual and future general conditions of inland navigation politics in context with the general concept for the Elbe river from German Federal Government and the intended reform of waterway administration will be discussed. Beyond that strategic possibilities and required conditions for inland navigation at Elbe river, heavy lift and project cargo in particular as well as bulk cargo, will be reviewed by industrial representatives.
